On this full day Introduction to soap-making workshop with local designer-maker Jenny Smith of The Scottish Soapworks, you will learn how to make traditional cold-process soap as well as melt and pour organic glycerine soap.
Jenny will begin by explaining the properties of the natural soaps and selection of essential oils that you will be working with. You will then choose a cold process recipe to make from a range of options. Jenny will demonstrate how to mix the reactive ingredients. You will then work together to measure and blend recipe ingredients, prepare a mould ready for soap-pouring, and, when the soap has cooled, pour the soap into the mould ready for 'curing'.
In the afternoon you will move onto working with organic glycerine soap. You will learn how to measure, melt, pour and mould your soap into shapes of your choice. While your soap is hardening, you will select your own packaging and embellishments from our craft table ready for gift wrapping your glycerine soap to take home.
Your cold process soap will stay with us to 'cure' for 3 weeks, and then will be collected by Jenny for cutting, wrapping and packaging ready to post to you. Please allow 4-5 weeks from the date of your workshop for your cold process soap to arrive.
You will have access to all the equipment you need, and the price includes includes all materials, a buffet style lunch and refreshments.
Subject to availability, this workshop is also available to book as a half-day option if you only want to learn one soap-making process. Please contact us if you'd like to know more.
This is a fun workshop where you will learn the basics of making soap at home for your own use. You are welcome to make notes and take photographs during the day, and you will be emailed a set of soap-making handouts. If you are interested in making soap for selling, please check Jenny's one-day soap-making business course and two-day soap and skincare making business course. The business courses are offered on a one-to-one basis and as well as making the soap on your own under Jenny's guidance, you will cover the topics of legislation, labelling, sourcing ingredients, recipe licensing and more.
Please note that The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor space and unfortunately we do not have lift access.
Introduction to soap-making: 15 February 2020 10am-5pm
The Arienas Collective workshops are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited to allow our artists and designer-makers to offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided and all the materials you will need (unless stated otherwise). Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
Refreshment breaks are an important part of The Arienas Collective workshops and experiences. They are a time to socialise, make new friends and chat to the artists and designer-makers. We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby and are proud to feature locally sourced food and drinks.
The price includes materials and refreshments, and of course you get to take home all the unique products you have created.
All our experiences are also available to book as a private group. Please email us for more information.
