INTRODUCTION TO SOAP-MAKING
Release your inner creative on our Introduction to Soap-Making workshop run by Edinburgh designer-maker Jenny Smith of The Scottish Soapworks.
You will learn how to create a log of cold-pressed soap ready to cure on our soap rack for 21 days. The day begins with a background to the design and soap-making process. You will then learn about the properties of our cold-pressed soap and selection of essential oils, and choose two recipes to make. Working in pairs, you will learn how to make up and line a mould in preparation for soup-pouring.
After lunch, when the soap has cooled, you will pour your soap into the mould and watch a demonstration on how to cut cold-pressed soap. You will then create your own decorative gift-wrapping. After 21 days you will return to collect and cut your cured soap to take home for wrapping in your pre-made gift packaging. Alternatively you can have your soap posted to you for cutting and gift wrapping at home.
Jenny has many years of experience in the soap industry, and those who are interested in setting up in business to make traditional cold-pressed soap can book onto a follow-up course at The Arienas Collective to learn about sourcing, labelling and other commercial matters.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience.
We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby who we love to support. You will start the day with a welcome coffee served with a selection of pastries, and our buffet-style lunches feature summer platters or warming winter soup with bread and cheese. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
Our artists will support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips on design, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
The price for the day includes all materials, coffee, tea, lunch and of course you get to take all the products your have created home to enjoy and inspire you, or to give to family and friends as unique gifts.
Please note: The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor open plan reception room and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies when booking.
